Can AI Agents Pay at Your Store? Stripe, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard Explained for Merchants

Yes. In October 2026 an AI agent can pay at your store if your checkout or payment provider speaks the agent's protocol. That means ACP for ChatGPT, and UCP for Google AI Mode and Gemini (early access). On Shopify, that is mostly the Agentic sales channel. You remain merchant of record, so refunds, returns and chargebacks remain yours.

Agentic commerce means an AI assistant finds a product, builds the cart and starts the payment for a shopper. Between April 2025 and October 2026, Stripe, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and Google each announced something for it. One of the most visible programs, ChatGPT Instant Checkout, was then scaled back.

This guide sorts it out from the merchant's side: what is live, what you switch on, and who carries the risk.

Key TakeawaysStripe's Agentic Commerce Suite was announced December 11, 2025. Since April 29, 2026, you manage catalogs and agent access in the Stripe Dashboard (Stripe, 2026).AI agents can pay at many stores today. On Shopify, ChatGPT purchases finish on your own online store checkout, with no channel fee beyond standard processing (Shopify Help Center, retrieved October 18, 2026).OpenAI scaled back ChatGPT Instant Checkout in March 2026. Merchants now use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on discovery (OpenAI, March 2026).PayPal's Agent Ready docs (updated October 13, 2026) cover ACP for ChatGPT and UCP for Google AI Mode and Gemini (PayPal Developer, 2026).Visa reported live agent transactions in Europe, with more than 30 issuers, on July 2, 2026 (Visa, 2026). You stay merchant of record under ACP and UCP (OpenAI; Google).

In this article:

How do AI agents actually pay for something?

An agent never needs your customer's raw card number. It either passes you a scoped payment token or hands the shopper off to your checkout. Everything else is plumbing between three layers.

  1. The agent surface: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity. This is where the shopper talks.
  2. The commerce protocol: the shared language between agent and store. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) comes from OpenAI and Stripe. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) comes from Google and Shopify. The Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) covers payment authorization. See ACP and UCP defined in our glossary.
  3. The payment rail: your processor and the card networks, which tokenize the card and verify the agent.

Middle layer, commerce protocols: ACP, UCP, and AP2 for payment authorization. Bottom layer, payment rails: Stripe Shared Payment Tokens, PayPal Agent Ready, Visa Trusted Agent Protocol and Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay. Base: you, the merchant of record, act on the protocol layer through your platform and on the rail layer through your existing processor. Stripe's Shared Payment Token (SPT) is the clearest example of a scoped credential. Stripe Docs call it "a scoped grant to use the customer's payment method" (Stripe Docs, retrieved October 18, 2026). The agent sets usage and expiration limits, such as a maximum amount and an expiry time.

AP2 attacks the same trust problem from the other side. Google announced it on September 16, 2025, built on "cryptographically-signed digital contracts" called mandates that prove what the shopper asked for (Google Cloud). Google donated AP2 to the FIDO Alliance on April 28, 2026 (Google).

The point most merchants miss: five logos do not mean five integrations. You touch layer 2 through your eCommerce platform and layer 3 through the processor you already use.

What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?

Instant Checkout launched on September 29, 2025, alongside ACP, built with Stripe (Stripe Newsroom). Shoppers could pay inside the chat. In March 2026, OpenAI pulled back from that model.

OpenAI's own wording: "the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery" (OpenAI, March 2026).

On Shopify, this is now concrete. Per the Shopify Help Center, "ChatGPT users complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab" (Shopify Help Center). Every payment method you already accept works. Shopify charges no fee for the ChatGPT channel. You pay only standard processing fees.

Our reading: after March 2026, "agentic checkout" on ChatGPT mostly means your checkout. Payment readiness is less about a new wallet. It is about whether the agent can find your SKU, trust it, and hand off to a checkout that works.

What does Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite do for a merchant?

Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite is one integration that makes your products discoverable and payable across several AI agents. You manage it from the Stripe Dashboard. It matters most if you sell on Stripe outside Shopify, or run a headless store.

Stripe announced the suite on December 11, 2025. Six platforms were named at launch: Squarespace, Wix, Etsy, WooCommerce, commercetools and BigCommerce (Stripe Newsroom).

Stripe Sessions followed on April 29, 2026. You "can now sell through AI agents by uploading your product catalog and managing agent access directly from the Stripe Dashboard" (Stripe Blog). The same post listed what was still ahead.

  • Google: customers "will soon be able to buy your products in AI Mode and the Gemini app" via UCP. Stripe's UCP docs describe Stripe's payment handler but give no launch date (retrieved October 18, 2026).
  • Meta: native checkout inside ads on Facebook, through a new partnership.
  • Payment methods: agents can pay in stablecoins, or in fiat through cards, Klarna and Affirm.

On control, Stripe is explicit. "As the merchant of record, you also retain all control over customer relationships, including how refunds and disputes are managed" (Stripe Blog, December 11, 2025). Orders flow into your existing fulfillment process.

Do you need Stripe at all? Not if you run Shopify. Shopify merchants reach ChatGPT, Copilot and Google through Shopify's own Agentic sales channel and existing payment setup.

What are PayPal, Visa and Mastercard doing?

PayPal documents a merchant-side option, Agent Ready. Visa and Mastercard work underneath. Their agent programs reach merchants through acquirers, processors and wallets, not a direct sign-up.

PayPal

PayPal moved on several fronts within weeks:

  • September 17, 2025: multiyear partnership with Google, covering PayPal checkout across Google products (PayPal Newsroom).
  • October 27, 2025: Mastercard Agent Pay to be integrated into the PayPal wallet; PayPal to pilot Mastercard's Agent Pay Acceptance Framework (PayPal Newsroom).
  • October 28, 2025: agentic commerce services, including Agent Ready (then "early 2026") and Store Sync for catalog data (PayPal Newsroom).
  • January 8, 2026: PayPal powers Microsoft's Copilot Checkout, starting on Copilot.com (PayPal Newsroom).

PayPal's Agent Ready developer docs, updated October 13, 2026, support ACP for ChatGPT and UCP for Google AI Mode and Gemini. They run on "your existing Braintree or PayPal merchant account" (PayPal Developer). The docs do not state a general-availability label.

Visa

Visa launched the Trusted Agent Protocol (TAP) with Cloudflare on October 14, 2025. TAP uses "agent-specific cryptographic signatures." They help merchants tell trusted agents from "malicious automation and rogue bots." It was "available today" in the Visa Developer Center and on GitHub (Visa).

Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect followed on April 8, 2026. It accepts agent payments over TAP, ACP, UCP and the Machine Payments Protocol through the Visa Acceptance Platform. It is in pilot with select partners (Visa).

On July 2, 2026, Visa reported live agent transactions at participating merchant websites in Europe. More than 30 European issuers were enabled. Visa Payment Passkeys authenticated the payments, supporting European Strong Customer Authentication rules (Visa).

Mastercard

Mastercard unveiled Agent Pay on April 29, 2025, built on Mastercard Agentic Tokens. AI agents must be registered and verified before they can pay (Mastercard). Stripe says it might use tokens from Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce on a seller's behalf (Stripe Docs, retrieved October 18, 2026).

On September 30, 2026, Mastercard added a score for how likely a transaction was started by an AI agent. It is "rolling out for testing in the U.S." (Mastercard).

Who is the merchant of record when an AI agent buys?

You are. Every primary source we checked says the same thing.

  • OpenAI (ACP): the merchant "actually selling goods and taking payment directly from the customer" is the merchant of record. Customers see your name on their card statement (OpenAI Developers, retrieved October 18, 2026).
  • Google (UCP): "You remain the Merchant of Record. Keep all of your customer data and relationships" (Google for Developers, retrieved October 18, 2026).
  • Google Universal Cart: shoppers "receive direct confirmations and customer support from the merchant," who will "remain the seller of record" (Google, October 15, 2026).
Merchant of record, in one line: OpenAI's ACP docs, Google's UCP guide and Google's Universal Cart launch all say the merchant remains merchant or seller of record (retrieved October 18, 2026). No agent platform we checked takes on refunds or chargebacks.

The practical consequence is simple. Tax, receipts, returns, customer service and the customer relationship stay with you. Shopify also requires a published Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Return/Refund Policy before ChatGPT can sell your products.

What changes for fraud, chargebacks and refunds?

Liability does not move to the AI company. The new tools aim at two goals: making agent traffic recognizable, and limiting what a credential can do.

Fraud. Each layer adds its own signal:

  • Visa TAP signatures separate trusted agents from bots.
  • Mastercard requires registered, verified agents, and is now testing a US score for AI-initiated transactions.
  • Stripe Radar scores agentic transactions for fraud dispute likelihood, card testing and stolen cards (Stripe Blog, December 11, 2025).
  • AP2 mandates create what Google calls a "non-repudiable audit trail" of what the shopper approved (Google Cloud).

Chargebacks. They stay yours. OpenAI's docs are plain. "Your platform is responsible for handling refunds and chargebacks, as you accepted the payment directly from the customer as the merchant of record." Use the ORDER_UPDATE webhook to keep ChatGPT in sync when a refund or chargeback status changes (OpenAI Developers).

Gap: we found no dedicated dispute reason codes or liability shift for agent-initiated transactions. That covers every Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and PayPal source we checked (as of October 18, 2026). Assume standard network rules apply through your processor. Do not assume a liability shift exists.

Refunds. Your own policy applies. Agent surfaces can show it to shoppers, so publish it and keep it machine-readable. Our checklist covers the feed and policy fields agents check.

What should a Shopify store switch on?

Most of the work happens in one place: Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. Follow these steps in order.

  1. Open the Agentic channel. Go to Sales channels > Agentic (Shopify calls the feature Agentic Storefronts). Review the AI channels listed there: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta (Shopify Help Center).
  2. Decide who manages the channels. To change one channel's settings, such as direct checkout, first deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me.
  3. Check eligibility. Your store must serve US customers. Products must meet Shopify Catalog standards. Accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms. Publish Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Return/Refund Policy.
  4. Set direct checkout per channel. On Microsoft Copilot, direct checkout "is active by default for eligible stores," with no channel fee (Shopify Help Center). ChatGPT purchases finish on your own checkout. Check each other channel's toggle; availability varies by store.
  5. Confirm PayPal coverage. If you accept PayPal, check Agent Ready coverage for ACP and UCP in your PayPal or Braintree account.
  6. Off Shopify on Stripe? Evaluate the Agentic Commerce Suite in the Stripe Dashboard. Note that Google AI Mode and Gemini were still "soon" in Stripe's April 29, 2026 post.
  7. Fix the product data. Agents cannot buy what they cannot find. Make each SKU checkout-ready with complete variants, GTINs, prices and stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?

Not in its original form. OpenAI scaled it back in March 2026 and now lets merchants use their own checkout. On Shopify, ChatGPT purchases complete on your online store checkout in an in-app browser or new tab (Shopify Help Center).

Do I need Stripe to sell through AI agents?

No. Shopify merchants use the Agentic sales channel with the payment methods they already accept. PayPal's Agent Ready docs cover ACP and UCP on an existing PayPal or Braintree account, with no general-availability label as of October 18, 2026. Stripe's suite suits stores already on Stripe outside Shopify.

What is the difference between ACP, UCP and AP2?

ACP is the checkout protocol from OpenAI and Stripe, used by ChatGPT. UCP is Google's open commerce standard, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart (Google, January 11, 2026). AP2 is Google's payment-authorization protocol, donated to the FIDO Alliance on April 28, 2026.

Am I liable for chargebacks on AI agent purchases?

Yes. As merchant of record, you handle refunds and chargebacks under ACP (OpenAI Developers) and under Stripe's suite (Stripe, December 11, 2025). No network source we checked publishes agent-specific dispute rules.

Do Visa and Mastercard require me to sign up?

Not directly. Their agent programs are offered through partners. Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect runs on the Visa Acceptance Platform. Mastercard Agent Pay reaches merchants through partners such as PayPal. Ask your processor which agent tokens it supports.

Payment Is the Easy Part

Three facts carry this post. In-chat checkout on ChatGPT retreated in March 2026, so ChatGPT purchases now finish on your own checkout. You stay merchant of record under ACP, UCP and Universal Cart, so refunds and chargebacks stay yours. The switches live in Shopify admin and in the processor you already use.

The harder question comes first: will an agent find and recommend your SKU at all? Run a free AEOsome AI shopping visibility check to see which AI shelves your products are on.
